With all the hullabaloo surrounding the upcoming elections, it makes me think of just one thing – Cheating. In the colorful political history of our country, each and every election is fraught with cheating and what not. Its not that I don’t believe that we have the capacity to change, we do. We, the Filipino, out of all races is the strongest, most steadfast democratic society I know. We have the urge to change, we want to change for the better. But the urge is just that – an urge. Wanting to change is entirely different from actually changing.
Given that some of us are going out of their way to foster change, causing ripples which might eventually turn into waves. Focus on the word “might”. Every little thing counts, every person no matter how small will eventually make their mark. But we have to admit that we as a people is a people easily enamored to fireworks. We more often than not let our emotions overtake our minds, now this particular quality has endeared us to many – “The Passionate Filipino People”. But this particular quality also spells our doom. The heart should always be coupled with the mind, a heartless mind is a corrupted mind but a mindless heart is a heart of doom.
With the elections just two days away, we have to make the right decision using both heart and mind. Are we going to choose a leader because the emotions of many are urging us to do so or are we going to go with our mind and choose a leader who might lead us out of corruption? Call me a pessimist but it is my belief that not one politician hasn’t played with fire. Corruption is well embedded into Philippine politics that getting away from it takes more than the will to change, it takes the will to actually act and change. People who tasted power no matter how small will eventually taste corruption and little by little like a wound festering, it will eventually corrupt not just their way of thinking but their whole being as well. To borrow from a famous saying, “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
The question now is, “Will you make the right choice and will that choice be made by a mindless heart, a heartless mind or with your mind and heart?”
Are you willing to actually act to change? Or will you just speak and think of change and do nothing? The choice is yours, but will you make the right one?
Lots of questions, but the main thing is: “Will your vote actually count?”
