My Paypal Account was HACKED!!!

by tim on January 15, 2008

You heard me right, my paypal account was hacked and it was all my fault. It has always been my practice to check the URL of every site I go to, I did not know what happened last night, I did not check the URL so I got HACKED, BIG TIME! Now I know, even internet savvy peeps are not immune to these hackers…

I did call paypal’s customer support but I must have been very unlucky last night because I got disconnected when the agent was supposed to transfer me to the resolution team. So I lost the money that I have in my paypal account, lucky for me, it was not much. I did submit the documents paypal needs to confirm my identity, so now I am waiting for them to give my account access back to me. It was a hard lesson to learn, but I learned nonetheless. Here is the email that I got and the web form that I stupidly answered: (click on the pictures to view full size)

Oh my gulay. Tsk tsk. That’s very unfortunate. That’s why we should always be cautious especially when it comes to personal accounts.

There are lots of maloko out there. Too bad you learned it the hard way.

    Cheer up.

I don’t think the right term is ‘paypal got hacked’. You were a victim of phishing.

Be careful na lang next time lalo na sa money-related sites (Paypal, Xoom, Ebay) etc. Don’t login using a link from an email and be sure to check the URL first.

Thank you all for your sentiments… I was using Firefox, and it did not detect that it was a phishing site. :(
Yes, the correct word should have been phishing, but I think “hacked” would be the first word that would come to mind if you do not know what phishing is… :)

what happenned to pinoy culture then?

let’s be more humane here rather than be more technical, be it being hacked or phishing, the worst and unfortunate part is being a victim here.

don’t let technology changes our character, the author was trying express his terms not trying to spell out terminologies here.

sorry for you dude, atleast lessons learned.

PayPal does not do “Random” security searches!! Do not believe that!!!
I almost fell for some of those one time.
Now I don;t get anymore of them… I think they’re scared of me now.
    lol.

I was hacked yesterday by the people and paypal has dropped the ball big time. An alert should have gone to all paypal members alerting them of this site. I had to change my bank accounts but the kicker is that paypal wont close my account until the transaction goes thru. Can you believe these people, wait for my money to dissapear. Never again will I deal with PayPal again.

I agree. I also had to change my bank details and even went so far as to cancel the credit card that I have on file and the documents paypal were asking me to provide to prove that I really am the owner of the account were a big headache to provide. I could not just provide them my bank details because the hacker has them and I could not just answer the secret questions, because, guess what?! I stupidly gave that answer to the hacker as well. But they did place my account on hold until further verification.
