Earthquake at 2:10 AM

by tim on August 1, 2008

2:10 AM – I was working on a website project, listening to my favorite hits. I was concentrating really hard because I have a deadline to meet when I was suddenly jogged out of my chair. I dragged my headphones with me but regained my balance, I then looked at my husband who was working behind me. It lasted for about 5 seconds 10-25 seconds (I originally though it was just 5 seconds but who could count correctly when under that situation? :) ), then it slowly dawned on me that we just experienced an earthquake and a strong one at that.

I ran to our room to check on the kids, Reign was crying but Khleomi was sleeping like an angel. But I did get a really bad feeling, I really hate earthquakes! Reign just went back to sleep and I am now going to resume work.

I wonder what the intensity was…

Update (Aug 02, 11:29AM):

(CNN) — A magnitude-6.4 earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean off the northern Philippines Sunday morning and was felt as far as southeastern Taiwan, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter was about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Basco, the capital of the Batan Islands in the Philippines and about 340 miles (550 kilometers) south of Taipei, Taiwan.

No injuries, deaths or damage were immediately reported, said Manny Torres of the National Disaster Coordinating Center in Manila, Philippines. The center put the earthquake at a 6.3 magnitude.

    Hi Meggy,

Thanks. :) I am not yet sure about the actual intensity for Iloilo City, we live in Bo. Obrero but it was really strong. According to CNN:

I thought I had a poltergeist in my room!
The quake shook the bed so bad that it actually wobbled. It takes a lot of force to move that bed and considering that its on the second floor of the house.
    Glad everyone’s safe.

hi tim.we were jst talkng about the said equake this morning.only dad and girlie didn’t knw about it.guess they’re really sound asleep upstairs……..the funny thing is,when that happened, carlo was frantically looking for a table to hide under it…hahahahaah.

yeah, I was scared out of wits myself. I always thought it was easy to follow those “Things to do when earthquakes occur”, such as hiding under tables, running to open spaces etc etc. Now I know better… I was scared witless and I could not think of anything to do.

Define irony: calmly getting out of your comfy bed at 2 AM, then leaving the 4th floor to go to the 1st floor to preempt any aftershocks, only to find out that you’re all alone in savoring this “bright” idea. lol. Btw, our building is packed with college students… Anyway, I predictably drowsed through the entire morning of an otherwise uneventful day.
P.S. Thanks for the info, your site has lotta more Google juice than any of the dailies, wink wink.

    Hi Rolf,

What can I say, I got to keep the juices flowing. :) Did you use the elevator or the stairs? lol

Lucky for me, I was only sitting in my chair when that happened. I wonder where I would be if I was up on the second floor…

may be the earthquake chain msgs came true, but the effect was 2weeks that is Aug 2!, not july 18..
    an omen i think!

Well, I don’t really believe in chain messages. I think its a waste of time and money. :) But anyhow, omen or not it was still a scary experience, an experience I don’t care to experience again. That’s three in one sentence!!! lol
